I visited Otaru Canal in mid-August 2026, and what impressed me most was the atmosphere at night.

If you have some extra time during your Hokkaido trip, I think Otaru is worth adding to your itinerary, especially for an evening visit.

I Recommend Visiting Otaru Canal at Night
I visited Otaru Canal at night in mid-August.
Personally, I recommend visiting in the evening or after sunset.
When it gets dark, the lights around the canal and warehouses create a beautiful atmosphere. The reflections on the water also make the scenery especially photogenic.
If you’re visiting Hokkaido during summer, one option is to spend the daytime sightseeing elsewhere and then head to Otaru in the late afternoon or evening.
You can walk around the canal, enjoy the night scenery, and have dinner before heading back.
Otaru Canal Cruise Is Popular
Another popular way to experience the area is the Otaru Canal Cruise.
Walking along the canal is completely enjoyable on its own, but the cruise gives you a different view of Otaru from the water.
If you have enough time, it could be a nice addition to your evening in Otaru.
Cruise schedules, prices, and availability can change, so I recommend checking the latest official information before your visit.
Otaru Beer Otaru Warehouse Was Very Popular
When I visited, Otaru Beer Otaru Warehouse was particularly busy.
Even at night, many people were waiting in line outside.
There also appeared to be plenty of other places to eat around the Otaru Canal area, so combining Otaru Canal sightseeing with dinner is a good option.
If there’s a particular popular restaurant you want to visit, leave some extra time in your itinerary in case you have to wait.
You Can Explore Otaru Canal on Foot
One thing I liked about the area was how easy it was to explore.
For sightseeing around Otaru Canal, walking is completely fine.
You can walk along the canal, stop to take photos, and visit nearby restaurants and shops without needing a car to move between each place.
I recommend wearing comfortable shoes and simply exploring the area at your own pace.
What About Parking?
I visited Otaru by car and saw several parking options around the Otaru Canal area.
I didn’t have much trouble finding somewhere to park during my visit.
However, parking availability can vary depending on the season, day, and time.
Once you’ve parked your car, I recommend exploring the main canal area on foot rather than driving between nearby attractions.
Is Otaru Canal Worth Visiting?
Based on my experience, Otaru Canal is worth considering if you have extra time during your Hokkaido trip.
I especially recommend it if you:
- Enjoy night scenery and illuminated streets
- Like taking travel photos
- Want to try the Otaru Canal Cruise
- Want to enjoy dinner in Otaru
- Want to explore somewhere outside Sapporo
If your Hokkaido itinerary is already packed, I don’t think you need to force Otaru into your schedule.
But if you have some free time while staying in or around Sapporo, an evening trip to Otaru can be a nice addition.
Final Thoughts: Visit Otaru Canal in the Evening
