If you love Japanese whisky and are traveling around Hokkaido, Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery is well worth adding to your itinerary.
I visited the distillery during my trip to Hokkaido. Although the official guided tour requires an advance reservation, I visited without a tour reservation and still had plenty to enjoy.
You can learn about the history of Nikka Whisky, visit the museum, try whisky at the paid tasting bar, and shop for souvenirs.

For international travelers interested in Japanese whisky, it can also be an interesting addition to a Hokkaido itinerary, especially when combined with Sapporo or Otaru.
Do You Need a Reservation for Yoichi Distillery?
It depends on what you want to do.
If you want to join the official guided distillery tour, you need to make a reservation in advance.
According to Nikka Whisky’s official website, the guided tour is free and takes visitors through the outdoor production area while explaining the whisky-making process and Nikka’s history. A tasting is also included.
Tour schedules and availability can change, so I recommend checking the official website before your trip.

Can You Visit Without a Reservation?
Yes. I visited without a guided tour reservation and still enjoyed the distillery.
According to the official visitor information, areas that can be enjoyed without a tour reservation include the Nikka Museum, paid tasting bar, distillery shop, and RITA’s KITCHEN restaurant.
However, there is an important difference:
Without a guided tour reservation, you cannot enter the outdoor production area.
So, if seeing more of the actual distillery is important to you, I recommend booking the guided tour in advance.
If you mainly want to learn about Nikka, taste whisky, and buy souvenirs, visiting without a tour reservation can still be worthwhile.
Learn About Whisky at the Nikka Museum
One of the places I enjoyed was the Nikka Museum.
The museum has exhibits where you can learn more about whisky and the history behind Nikka.
For me, this made the visit more interesting because I wasn’t simply tasting whisky — I could also learn more about the story and culture behind it.
The official website currently lists the museum’s opening hours as 9:15 AM to 4:15 PM.
Always check the latest information before visiting, as opening hours may change.
Try Japanese Whisky at the Paid Tasting Bar
If you enjoy whisky, don’t miss the paid tasting bar.
The bar offers a variety of Nikka whiskies, including distillery-exclusive products. Visitors can also prepare their own highball or whisky and water.
This was one of the highlights for me because you can enjoy whisky even if you haven’t booked the guided tour.
Driving? Don’t Drink Whisky
When I visited, there was a large parking area, and I had no problem finding somewhere to park.
However, there is one important thing to remember if you drive.
Do not drink alcohol if you are driving.
Japan has strict laws against drunk driving. If you want to enjoy the whisky tasting, make sure someone in your group who isn’t drinking can drive, or use another form of transportation.
I also saw some visitors walking to the distillery during my visit.
If tasting whisky is one of the main reasons for your visit, plan your transportation before you go.
Don’t Miss the Distillery Shop
The Distillery Shop is also worth visiting.
According to the official website, it sells distillery-exclusive whisky as well as Nikka goods, snacks, and other souvenirs.
I found the souvenir section quite extensive when I visited.
It’s a good place to look for something special to take home, particularly if you or someone you know enjoys Japanese whisky.
Is Yoichi Distillery Worth Visiting Without a Tour Reservation?
Based on my experience, yes.
I didn’t have a guided tour reservation, but I was still able to learn about whisky, visit the museum, enjoy the paid tasting bar, and browse the souvenir shop.
I would think of it this way:
Want the full distillery experience? → Book the guided tour in advance.
Couldn’t get a reservation? → You can still enjoy several areas without one.
If Japanese whisky interests you, I wouldn’t necessarily skip Yoichi Distillery just because you couldn’t get a guided tour reservation.

The guided distillery tour requires an advance reservation, but several facilities can still be enjoyed without booking the tour.
