If you’re looking for places to visit in Sapporo, you may come across Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill.
It’s famous for the statue of Dr. William S. Clark, as well as its open views of Sapporo and the surrounding landscape.
I visited Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill in mid-August 2026.
The scenery was beautiful and I enjoyed taking photos with the Clark statue and seeing the sheep. However, I personally felt that the admission fee was a little expensive for the overall experience.
So, is Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill worth visiting?

What Is Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill?
Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill is a sightseeing spot in Sapporo, Hokkaido.
Unlike the busy city center, the area has a much more open and relaxing atmosphere.
The most famous attraction is the statue of Dr. William S. Clark, known for the phrase:
“Boys, Be Ambitious!”
It’s one of Sapporo’s recognizable photo spots and a popular place for visitors to take a memorable picture during their trip.
Take a Photo with the Dr. Clark Statue
One of the main reasons people visit Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill is the Dr. Clark statue.
You can stand near the statue and take a photo while copying Clark’s famous pointing pose.
With the wide landscape behind you, it’s a fun place to take a classic Sapporo travel photo.
If you’ve seen pictures of the statue before visiting Hokkaido, seeing it in person can be an enjoyable part of your trip.
Beautiful Views of Sapporo
One of my favorite things about Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill was the scenery.
From the observation area, you can enjoy wide views toward Sapporo while surrounded by a much more natural landscape than you’ll find in the city center.
I visited in mid-August, when the scenery was green and felt very open.
You can also see sheep at the park, which adds to the Hokkaido atmosphere.
Simply walking around and enjoying the scenery was relaxing.
Learn About the Sapporo Snow Festival
Another interesting attraction is an exhibition about the famous Sapporo Snow Festival.
The facility displays materials related to the festival and its history.
I visited Sapporo during summer, so it was interesting to learn about one of the city’s most famous winter events even though there was obviously no snow outside.
If you’re visiting Hokkaido outside the winter season, it’s a small way to learn more about this important part of Sapporo’s culture.
I Thought the Admission Fee Was a Little Expensive
This is one part of my experience that I think is worth mentioning.
Personally, I felt the admission fee was a little expensive considering the size of the attraction and what there is to do.
The scenery is beautiful, the Clark statue is iconic, and seeing the sheep is enjoyable.
However, I wouldn’t personally consider Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill an absolute must-see attraction for everyone visiting Sapporo.
Admission prices can change, so check the official website for the latest information before visiting.
Is Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill Worth Visiting?
Based on my experience, I would recommend prioritizing Sapporo’s major attractions and local food first if you have limited time.
However, Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill can be a good addition if you have extra time in your Sapporo itinerary.
I especially recommend it if you:
- Want a photo with the famous Dr. Clark statue
- Enjoy open landscapes and scenic views
- Want to see sheep in Sapporo
- Are interested in the Sapporo Snow Festival
- Have extra time after visiting Sapporo’s main attractions
If you only have one or two days in Sapporo, there may be other places I would prioritize first.
But if you’re staying longer and wondering “Where else can I go in Sapporo?”, Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill is worth considering.
Final Thoughts
I visited Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill in mid-August 2026 and enjoyed the beautiful scenery, sheep, Dr. Clark statue, and Sapporo Snow Festival exhibition.
At the same time, I personally thought the admission fee was a little high for the overall experience.
My recommendation is simple:
If your Sapporo itinerary is already full → You don’t need to prioritize it.
If you have some extra time → It’s worth considering.
For travelers who want to take a classic photo with the Dr. Clark statue and enjoy a quieter side of Sapporo, Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill can be a pleasant addition to a summer trip in Hokkaido.
